PROBLEM

HOW MIGHT WE DESIGN AN APP THAT EMPOWERS PEOPLE TO LEARN NEW VOCABULARY?

INSPIRATION

The first step is getting to know the problem space we are operating within. It’s important to get a feel for what kinds of issues are related to the problem we are investigating and to take a look at what solutions to similar problems have already been proposed.

USER INTERVIEWS

I have conducted individual interviews in order to find the user needs, motivation, frustrations, and validate my initial assumptions.

Some patterns of how interviewees studied new vocabulary.

  • They use different approaches for memorizing
  • There is always a “theme”, when they learning new vocabulary

CONCEPTUALIZATION

Using feedback from users that I acquired via user interviews, I was able to identify users goals and create personas

POV – PERSONAS

Putting together the research with my assumptions I have created my user persona, Jonathan & Julie, which helped me to put myself in the user mindset and keep the project focused on the user.

TASK ANALYSIS / USER FLOW

Entry point: Open application

Success criteria: Onboarding and create a vocabulary

Step 1: onboard tutorial + features

Step 2: create an account or skip

Step 3: home screen

Step 4: add new vocabulary

Step 5: choose a language

Step 6: add and save words to a vocabulary

ITERATION

In this stage, I was testing the prototypes with real users, collecting feedback, then improving and iterating on the designs again and again. Validating the design in the early stages is a great way to solve problems before they reach a product development team.

WIREFRAMING & PROTOTYPING

After defining my user persona I developed low fidelity wireframes and prototype and focused mainly on the primary features and flows of the app.

Welcome / Onboarding

Create vocabulary

Add word to a vocabulary

Exercise

Create an account

USABILITY TESTING

I decided to test the main features of the app such as create a vocabulary, add a word to vocabulary, exercise, registration to see if the users would have any difficulty or limitation in their learning process.

Early prototype

Some users lost track of their “location”,
confused “Add Board”
with “Add Word”

Improvements

Rearrange “edit” function with
“Add new board” function.

NEXT STEPS

• Test Prototype again with the new improvements

• Extend the prototype with more screen (such as exercises, setting, and filter) and create high-fidelity wireframes to conduct a different kind of usability test

• Analyze the new feedbacks and implement the improvements

• Finalize design + Test again to see how the users react to the new design

• Launch & Iterate-The product is updated in iterations based on user feedback and further rounds of research and testing
